Mailbox Accident; Unidentified 82-year-old Man KIlled In A Devastating Accident
An 82-year-old man tragically lost his life Thursday afternoon after being struck by a vehicle while crossing the street near his home in Georgetown Township, according to authorities with the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office.
The fatal crash occurred shortly before 3 p.m. on VanBuren Street near 22nd Avenue. Investigators say the elderly man had been attempting to cross the roadway to reach a mailbox when he was struck by a passing Jeep Wrangler operated by a 16-year-old driver.
Emergency crews, including deputies and medical responders, quickly arrived at the scene after receiving reports of the collision. First responders immediately began life-saving efforts in an attempt to help the victim. Despite those efforts, authorities said the man ultimately succumbed to the severe injuries he sustained in the crash.
Officials have not yet publicly released the identity of the victim pending notification of family members and completion of the investigation.
Authorities confirmed that the 16-year-old driver and a 14-year-old passenger riding in the Jeep were not physically injured during the incident. Investigators have not indicated at this stage whether speed, visibility, distraction, or any other contributing factors may have played a role in the collision.
The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office remains actively involved in examining the circumstances surrounding the crash.
