Mike Bennett Obituary, Marion, IL; Beloved Arts Leader, Vietnam Veteran, and Civic Center Director Has Passed Away

Marion, Illinois — The Marion community is honoring the life and legacy of Mike Bennett, who passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, at the age of 82 while surrounded by love at the Marion VA Medical Center – CLC. His devoted wife, Cheryl Bennett, was by his side during his final moments.

Born on October 26, 1943, in Herrin, Illinois, to Audra and Gertrude (Maxedon) Bennett, Mike Bennett lived a life defined by service, culture, faith, and dedication to his community.

A proud United States Army veteran, Mike faithfully served his country during the Vietnam War before receiving an honorable discharge. His commitment to service continued long after his military years, reflected in decades of community involvement and leadership throughout Marion.

While many knew him as a veteran and volunteer, countless others remember Mike Bennett for the extraordinary mark he left on the arts in Southern Illinois.

For forty years, he served as the cultural arts director of the Marion Cultural and Civic Center, helping shape the city’s artistic identity and bringing generations together through theater, performances, and community events. His passion for cinema and performing arts was lifelong. Earlier in his career, he managed the Town and Country Cinema in Marion, where his appreciation for classic films became well known among friends and colleagues.

To many in Marion, Mike was more than an arts advocate—he was part of the heartbeat of the community itself.

He also devoted time to charitable and educational causes, volunteering with the Marion school system whenever his health allowed. Mike was a longtime member of Heartland Christian Church of Marion and remained grounded in his Christian faith throughout his life.

On April 14, 2014, Mike married Cheryl Legada Ciudad in Chicago, Illinois. Together, they shared twelve years of marriage filled with companionship, love, and devotion.

Mike Bennett is survived by his loving wife, Cheryl Bennett of Marion; nieces Valerie Nolen (Jay Tennies), Cindy (Rob) Blim, and Diana Bennett; grand-nephew Matthew; along with many extended relatives and friends who will continue to cherish his memory.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Bobbie Bennett, Willard Bennett, and Dale Bennett; sister Wanda Nolen; and nephew Sandy Bennett.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Wilson-McReynolds Funeral Home in Marion, Illinois.

A visitation will be held at Heartland Christian Church, located at 900 East Boyton Street in Marion, on Saturday, May 9, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m.

The funeral service will follow at noon with Bro. Greg Gibbs officiating. Burial will take place at Mulkeytown Cemetery in Mulkeytown, Illinois.

Military honors will be presented at the graveside by the Christopher American Legion Post #528 Funeral Honors Detail and the United States Army Funeral Honors Detail.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to “CLC – Hospice” or “Heartland Christian Church.”

Mike Bennett’s celebration of life will reflect a man who served his country honorably, enriched his community culturally, and touched lives through kindness, leadership, and unwavering dedication.
